Design Exhibition: Tijuana Showrooms SDDW

The Tijuana spaces explore the essence of design in our own way, where proximity to the viewer is paramount. An environment is created that not only presents objects and products but also invites you to immerse yourself in a unique shopping experience across various design disciplines: fashion, craftsmanship, decoration—a setting that connects us with its surroundings, redefining the visibility and closeness of the design world, where each element tells a unique story. This space goes beyond an exhibition; it is a lived experience, collaborating with our friends at Plants Por Favor, a design and maintenance studio for indoor and outdoor plant installations, reconnecting with Nature.

This experience is designed to offer a deep immersion into the design and art initiatives of the region, showcasing the diversity and creative richness that Tijuana has to offer, fostering cultural exchange and collaboration between designers, artists, and design enthusiasts in San Diego and Tijuana.

Join us for the Opening of our collective exhibition featuring 5 showrooms from Tijuana, each with its own style and proposal.

Botanical Dyeing 101 with Andie Thompson

Botanical Dyeing 101 with Andie Thompson

Join us for an exploration of the ancient art of using natural materials to create stunning and sustainable dyes.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will embark on a journey through the rich history and diverse techniques of botanical dyeing. From selecting and preparing plant-based materials to understanding the alchemy of color extraction, our experienced instructors will guide you through every step of the process.

Stage 1: Weighing and preparation. The goods to be dyed are weighed so the proper amount of dye, water, and associated substances are used for the dying process. We will review what is needed to set up your own dye kitchen or dye space at home and what key elements/utensils/tools  are needed and where/how to source them.

Stage 2: Scouring. Scouring, or prewashing, removes any oil, starch, or other agents left in the goods from the manufacturing process.

Stage 3: Mordanting. Mordanting is the process of applying a naturally occurring, water soluble metallic salt or natural substance (soy milk) to create a bind between the fiber and the dye - think of mordant as a glue that keeps the color stuck to the food you are dyeing. This process helps you obtain more consistent results with greater color saturation and colorfastness (the color stays after wash and wear).

Stage 4: Dyeing. The actual dyeing process will vary depending on which dye you are using. When working with whole dye stuff (like avocado pits or onion skins) the process can be very similar to dyeing tea. When working with extracts, you simply dissolve the powder in hot water. For the Botanical Dyeing 101 course, we will be doing three examples of working with whole dye stuff.

Stage 5: After dyeing, textiles must be washed to remove any excess dye

About Andie
San Diego native, Andie Thompson is a botanical dyer and educator with a passion for infusing art with environmental consciousness. Her journey into the world of natural dyeing first began over ten years ago while in college studying sociology and environmental science in Portland, Oregon, where she was fascinated by the intersection of creativity and sustainability. She found inspiration in the idea of repurposing food waste from the restaurant she worked at into dyes to bring new life to well-loved things while diverting food waste from local landfills, highlighting the idea that one could create beauty while simultaneously nurturing the planet. This ethos became the driving force behind her work, leading to the concept and creation of Esra Collective, her botanically dyed, ethically made, organic clothing and homewares line.

As an educator, Andie is dedicated to sharing her knowledge and passion with others, empowering all individuals to feel welcome to step into exploring the possibilities of botanical dyeing while fostering a deeper connection with nature. She believes that there is a healing both for ourselves and the earth when we slow down and find the joy in play while working with natural dyes found in our local ecosystems.

Andie lives in South Park, San Diego with her partner, two children Nyah and Kai, and their golden retriever Delilah.

Each participant will take home a two pairs of socks and a a bandana naturally dyed during the workshop. Refreshments and snacks will be provided during the experience.

Sound Healing Journey

Sound Healing Journey

Sound, Plants and Community. Please join us for a Sound Healing Journey early in the morning at the garden center lead by Dongchen Zhong.

I have been a believer of the healing power of the Himalayan soundbowls the moment I felt its energy and vibration. Initially, the soundbowls can help you relax and achieve a deeper sense of rest. With deeper exploration, it may allow a person to dive into their consciousness and uncover layers of themselves. It may also facilitate the release of any energetic blocks. I like to call it sound journey as, sometimes vision journey may happen with the bowls.

Physiologically the vibration can reach the organs, the fascial layers and can therefore help release deep pain that sometimes body has gotten use to and only when released will you feel an explainable sense of lightness.

My name is Dongchen Zhong, and I been practicing with the bowls for the last 4 years and I learned it from the Himalayan lineage from my teacher Sinseh Mori. I am an ERYT200 yoga teacher with more than 1000 hours of training and currently undertaking a Doctoral degree in Acupuncture of Chinese medicine. I have learned the different healing modalities and medicine to help myself and my community. I was also the Head Yoga coach at the Virgin fitness group in Singapore and had my own yoga studio and school in Seychelles.

My life philosophy: "leave things better than how I found it" and "unlearning is as important as learning".
